Why I recommend shopping locally

May 21, 2014

I had the great fortune of experiencing the direct benefit of shopping local and supporting our area’s small, family-owned businesses. I was having some difficulties with my car and returned to Narrowsburg Motor Sales (NMS), where I bought it four years ago. NMS has done all of the routine maintenance, so they know the car well. Little time was lost as the issues were diagnosed, parts ordered and repairs completed.

This past week, the gear selector control on my garden tiller broke. Late Monday afternoon, I managed to get the machine to Eschenberg Supply, where I purchased it. I have purchased all of my power tools from Eschenberg. I was greeted by a willing and cheerful team of mechanics who had the tiller repaired and sent me on my way in less than an hour. Such service is not available from the “big box” stores. Taking my tiller to any other shop would not have been met with the same response.

The lesson—when we shop local, choose to spend our money with local businesses, we not only create a vibrant economy, we also create relationships. These relationships create a vibrant community, which continues to strengthen our local economy. Yes, the initial purchase might cost a little bit more, and in my world, that is a wise investment.

Thank you, Kathleen, Ben and Corey, Dee and Ryan of Narrowsburg Motors. Thank you, Dennis, Raymond and crew at Eschenberg Supply.

Our community is blessed by your business and personal ethic.
