Local boy scouts participate in annual Klondike Derby
February 19, 2014 —
MONTICELLO, NY — Over 20 Boy Scouts from Shohola Troop 76 participated in Hudson Valley Council’s annual Klondike Derby. This year, the derby was held at Mahogany Ridge Hunting Club in Monticello. A total of 16 area Boy Scout troops and three Webelos (Cub Scout) packs entered the derby.
Shohola Troop 76 entered two separate patrols. Each patrol was charged with the task of developing a sled, made to specifications. The sled was then filled with specific equipment that the scouts organized and brought with them. The patrol then moved the sled to various stations where they competed, earning nuggets, in performing winter survival tasks such as building fires, ice rescue, first aid, and building a shelter. They were also responsible to cook their own hot lunch. One of Troop 76’s patrols won second place and the other patrol tied, with three other patrols, for third place. As the Scouts spent several weekends prior to the derby preparing for this competition, they wish to thank Ray and Karin Willis of Ray’s Auto Repair, for their support and encouragement.
