Callicoon annual appointments approved; Greek festival coming in spring

JEFFERSONVILLE, NY — In its regular monthly town and annual re-organizational meeting, the board of the Town of Callicoon approved the town’s annual positions and salaries, with only two minor changes. This year’s town accountant is Rouis & Co., LLP and the town’s long-defunct county planning board liaison was officially struck from the list of appointments. The town is also in search of a representative for its fire advisory board, which meets every other month. The board would particularly like to install a local firefighter to the position and welcomes suggestions.

The board agreed to purchase a 2009 Ford pickup and to request a bid on their 2003 Ford truck. With regard to transportation, Supervisor Tom Bose praised Highway Superintendent Kris Scullion and his team for maintaining the roads during this winter’s storms and fluctuating temperatures.

Last month’s request by representatives of the St. Nektarious Greek Monastery of Fremont to convene a Greek festival in Callicoon Center Town Park has now been approved. The festival is scheduled for the weekend of May 30. The town has received payment and a refundable deposit and hopes that this will be a positive experience for the town, bringing new people in and even becoming an annual event.

Supervisor Bose was recently approached by a representative of the Tremper Estate in Youngsville, who offered to sell the town a pavilion that was mistakenly built on their property, rather than on public property. It was agreed that the board is not interested in the property but will get the word out to any other interested parties. The board recently accepted a proposal to finish the kitchen area of the Callicoon Center Town Park Pavilion and is working on purchasing relevant equipment. The board also agreed to purchase a roll-up aluminum window for the pavilion’s serving area.

The board was recently notified that property on Stump Pond Road was sold. Due to the legal classification of the property’s dam, notice of purchase must be given to both the New York Department of Environmental Conservation as well as the municipality. The purchaser’s lawyer provided the relevant emergency action plan for the dam, along with notification.
