Keeping the general store’s ‘old charm’

July 24, 2013

I am a resident of the wonderful town of Cochecton. When I first moved up to Sullivan County in 1997 and went into Heinle’s General Store, I felt like I was walking into Ike Godsey’s general store from the Walton’s. Over the years I have seen it go from Doug to Brian, to Mr Shin, to Ronnie D’s pizza parlor, then to the bank and finally to the present owners. One of the last conversations I had with Doug Heinle was what he thought of what was going on with Heinle’s. Doug told me that he went and introduced himself to the new owners and they showed him around. Doug said you have to keep up with the times and he was so thrilled that Heinle’s was not sitting there any more as an empty building. Doug was so happy that they kept the original floor and ceiling. “They are trying to keep the old charm.” It is so nice to be able to just go down the road to get milk, ice cream, cold cuts and most important, gas. I personally would like to thank Nick, Laura Santana and their family for bringing life back to Cochecton Center.
