Thoughts on revising Town of Delaware zoning
As reported in the April 5, 2013 Sullivan County Democrat, the county legislature met recently with local politicians, business people and members of the public to review the results of the legislature’s economic survey. Among the top priorities were maintaining tourism and continuing to market and enhance the sustainability of our communities through arts, culture and recreation. These conclusions should come as no surprise. From the boarding houses, to the hotels, to the second home market, Sullivan County’s economic health has always been connected with, and reliant on, these important facets of our economy.
But what does come as a surprise is that the planning board in the Town of Delaware, which includes the hamlet of Callicoon, is choosing to bite the hand that’s fed it by amending the town’s zoning regulations to allow natural gas compressor stations in the village’s business and rural districts. It’s obvious that a compressor station is not compatible with our well-being or our economic assets and that it will put the livelihoods and possibly health of the entire community at risk.
The new zoning regulations will be presented to the town board at their April meeting. A public hearing (date to be announced) on the topic will follow. That’s when we, the people, will have the opportunity to urge our town board to make a responsible decision that places the health and economic welfare of many above profit for a few.
