Schreibman can build on Hinchey’s legacy

May 31, 2012

I’ve had the great honor to work for the past decade for Congressman Hinchey, whose upcoming retirement from public office will leave large shoes to fill. The congressman set high standards for his offices and was a tireless fighter for our local communities and his many constituents. As a result of the recent Congressional redistricting, the 22nd district which he so ably represented will be split up into a number of adjoining districts, with Sullivan and Ulster shifting into the new 19th district.

No one can fully replace Maurice in Congress, but it is critical that we elect someone in the new 19th district who will continue to build upon his legacy of progressive representation for our region. I am alarmed at the possibility that next year, our area could be represented in Congress by a Tea Party Republican who has consistently voted against women’s rights, labor protections, the environment, Medicare and many other issues that Maurice championed during his tenure in Congress. In order to ensure that this doesn’t happen, Democrats need to choose the strongest candidate to defeat Republican Chris Gibson, which is why I am supporting Julian Schreibman.

Julian Schreibman is highly qualified and deeply committed to building upon Maurice’s progressive legacy. Raised in a working class family and educated in Kingston public schools, Julian worked his way through college and law school and had a distinguished career in law and public service. Like Maurice, Julian did not forget his modest roots or turn his back on public policies that offer critical opportunities to low income and middle class families. Instead, Julian is stepping up to continue the battle to ensure that working families regain the opportunities and economic security that continue to be eroded by regressive federal policies.

During my years working with Congressman Hinchey, I have seen firsthand the tangible and positive impacts that result from having an effective and principled voice in the U.S. Congress for the Catskills and Hudson Valley regions. I am confident that Julian Schreibman can be the next voice to continue Maurice’s impressive representation for our region, and I hope you will join me in voting for Julian Schreibman in the upcoming Democratic primary on June 26.
