Man pleads guilty to possession of stolen Landfield Avenue Synagogue Torah

May 16, 2012

Sullivan County District Attorney Jim Farrell announced today that Christopher Colvill, 41, of Liberty, N.Y. entered a plea of guilty in Sullivan County Court (May 15, 2012), to Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the 3rd Degree, a class D felony, for the possession of the stolen Landfield Avenue Synagogue Torah.

Farrell said that under the terms of the plea agreement Colvill is expected to receive a sentence of 3 to 6 years in state prison when he is sentenced on August 16, 2012 by County Judge Michael McGuire.

Colvill admitted to possessing the sacred Torah at a residence in Woodridge back on January 24, 2012, with the intent to benefit himself and to prevent recovery of the Torah by the synagogue. The synagogue was burglarized in late December when the Torah and cash were stolen. Colvill was arrested after a joint investigation by the Monticello Police and the New York State Police. The burglary of the synagogue remains under investigation.
