Sullivan legislature nixes steering committee

February 15, 2012

The Sullivan County Legislature voted on Thursday to do away with the steering committee that met once a week to go over policy matters. The committee was made up of three of the nine elected legislators and the county manager.

Legislator Alan Sorensen, who as the minority leader was a member of the committee, said after attending one that he was going to boycott them. Sorensen criticized the committee because it put too much control in the hands of the members, and “limited the flow of important information and the contribution of each member in formulating county policy.”

Additionally, Robert Freeman, executive director of the NYS Committee on Open Government, said that the meetings were being conducted in violation of the Open Meetings Law.
Instead of the steering committee meetings, the legislature will now hold two executive committee meetings each month, rather than one.
