Monticello man arrested on rape charge

A Monticello man has been arrested on rape charges. Michael Burnett, 31, was arrested on October 26 after the alleged victim alerted police about the incident. According to a press release, the victim had recently become acquainted with Burnett, and asked him for a ride to residence on Liberty Street. Burnett allegedly drove into a parking lot where he choked the victim before allegedly assaulting her.
Burnett was arrested a couple of hours later in the day in a residence on Park Avenue. The victim was taken to Catskill Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The charges against Burnett inlcude rape in the first degree, unlawful imprisonment in the first degree, misdemeanors for obstructing breathing and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. He was also wanted by the city of Middletown police on an arrest warrant for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
He was remanded to the Sullivan County jail without bail, awaiting further court action.
