GLEN SPEY, NY — Lumberland Supervisor Jenny Mellan, center left, is pictured August 10 with former Supervisor, now county Legislator Nadia Rasjz and other members of the town’s Ukrainian-American community after the town board approved a proclamation noting the 25th anniversary of the August 24, 1991 declaration of Ukraine’s independence from the Soviet Union. The proclamation called Russia’s recent occupation of Crimea illegal and called on the U.S. to respond to further Russian aggression against Ukraine. Lumberland recognizes the anniversary annually.
