PORT JERVIS, NY — Despite the sweltering heat, several participants came to the second annual Tri-State Triathlon held on Sunday August 7, battling to win in the combined time results of a swim, a bike ride and a run. The race started from the West End Beach in Port Jervis, followed by a bike ride to Hawk’s Nest in Deerpark, with a 5k run through the city of Port Jervis to finish it off. The bike ride length was about 10k, and the swim 500 meters.

Several age groups competed, and there was also an open category. Two teams also competed.

It may come as a surprise to some that the winner of the males over 75 category, William Schneider, reported a time on greenleafracing.com of 1:21:56.6. That’s better than Keith Sullivan, the winner in the youngest male age group of 25 to 29, whose time is recorded as 1:27:36.8.

Nancy Bachman, the women’s over-75 category winner at 1:53:29.8, also did well, although she didn’t beat the winner of the youngest women’s age group, 20 to 24, Audrey Brand, who ran in at 1:43:01.7.

The female open winners were Aleksandra Vukojicic, Sarah Obrien and Barbara Sessa. Male open winners were John McGurk, Douglas Thomson and Michael Bassett.

The Port Jervis Recreation Department started the race last year and is hoping to attract visitors and racers to the annual event in keeping with the city’s vision of branding itself as a destination for outdoor sports and other recreational opportunities.
