Catskill Chill Music Festival spends its last year in Hancock this weekend

HANCOCK, NY — This year may be your last chance to attend the three-day Catskill Chill Music Festival. If you haven’t heard of the popular and expanding “festy,” it features jam bands and electronic acts galore coupled with camping at a well-established campground and other peaceful activities like Yoga in the Wellness Village. It’s being held this year at Camp Minglewood from September 18 to 20.

However, this will be the sixth and final year Catskill Chill comes to Hancock, calling the festivities “A Farewell to Minglewood,” before the event moves to a new home in 2016. “It is with heavy hearts that we have to announce that 2015 will mark the final year of the Catskill Chill’s glorious run at Camp Minglewood,” said festival founder Dave Marzollo. “We would keep our event at its original home forever if we could, but we have been informed that, for reasons beyond our control, we will no longer be able to host our family at the place we’ve come to love.”

Catskill Chill features free parking, daily yoga, live art, a farmer’s market, craft and food vendors, a communal bonfire nightly and an open mic. Nestled in the Catskill Mountains, where the beauty of nature synchronizes with the euphoric sounds of live music, this intimate lakeside celebration is one of the most anticipated events in the New York area and is annually expected to sell out.

The headliner in this year’s lineup is Moe, generally stylized as moe., an American jam band formed at the University at Buffalo in 1989. Other top artists include Lotus, Zappa Plays Zappa, Lettuce, Electron, The Motet and Dopapod. Plenty of other musical acts round out the lineup, with a little something for everyone. As is tradition, the Chill will feature a number of tribute sets, which are always fan favorites during the weekend. Dopapod and Turkuaz will team up for Dopakuaz plays Studio 54, Twiddle offers up their electric take on Grateful Dead tunes, and the Chillfam All-Stars will perform a Herbie Hancock Tribute, while Shwizz and FiKus join forces for ShwiKus plays the ‘80s.

Particle, the only band that has performed at every Chill since its inception, will have the honor of closing out the weekend at Camp Minglewood, bringing an all-star cast of guest performers on stage with them for the celebration.

The parking lot and campground will open at about 9 a.m. on Friday and will close around 3 p.m. on Monday. You are allowed to enter after that point and leave whenever you need to. The concerts will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday and will end in the wee hours of Sunday night (technically Monday morning).

Camping is free at the Catskill Chill, with the purchase of a ticket. Campers may set up their tents in any of the designated camping areas of Camp Minglewood. Make yourself at home in one of the spacious grassy fields and enjoy these autumn nights under the stars. Some of the camping areas are close enough to hear the music, while the farthest camping area is no more than a 15 minute walk from the main stage.

Some tickets may be sold at the gate, but it’s best to purchase your tickets now. A weekend of music, camping in the beautiful Catskills, and making life-long friends is all part of the “ChillFam” experience. Visit www.catskillchill.com.
