ELDRED, NY — Highland Supervisor and Democrat, Andrew Boyar confirmed Tuesday that he would not seek re-election, and planned to nominate councilman Donald “Jeff” Haas, a Republican, as his successor at the August 18, Highland Democratic Party caucus.
Boyar, who served close to two decades in two separate incumbencies, said he is now dealing with serious health issues. “I love the area and plan to stay involved, but I don’t want to spend so much time in meetings anymore,” he said.
Haas is serving his first term on the town board, but has a lifelong history of civic service, most closely related to the Yulan Fire Department, which he has headed as both chief and president.
As to Haas’ registration, Boyar said party politics have never prevented either party from selecting the best available candidate in Highland.
Boyar was facing a caucus challenge from Democrat challenger, builder Charles “Chuck” Petersheim.
