HARRISBURG, PA — The PA Senate Finance Committee on September 16 voted six to five to approve Senate Bill 76, which would reform the way schools generate revenue. The bill calls for eliminating property tax and raising money to pay for schools through amended sales and property tax programs.
Sen. Judy Schwank issued the following statement about the vote: “Although it was a narrow vote, it was a positive vote, and the full Senate will now get the chance to consider SB 76.” Schwank, who is one of the bill’s prime sponsors, said, “There will be more discussion, debate and consideration given to this issue, which is as it should be. There is no doubt that too many families in Berks County and throughout the commonwealth are being crushed by steep property levies. They need relief, and they need it quickly.”
