MONTICELLO, NY — Monticello Police arrested Zaquarntri Legrand, 56, and Esaw Wise, 66, both of Monticello on July 4, on charges of stealing a woman’s pocketbook at a fast-food restaurant.

Police officials say the pocketbook belonged to a 57-year-old woman from Ithaca, who accidently left it behind when she left the Wendy’s Restaurant in the Village of Monticello.

The pocketbook contained a cellular phone, credit cards and an iPad.

Upon discovering she had forgotten it, she returned to the restaurant, but her purse was missing.

The woman notified police, who looked over the restaurant’s surveillance video and were able to identify Legrand and Wise as the people who took the purse and then left the restaurant.

On July 4, police were able to trace the iPad via a GPS tracking system to an apartment house located at 25 Starr Ave. in Monticello.

Officers then remotely activated an iCloud alarm system on the iPad, which led them directly to Legrand and Wise’s apartment. The stolen pocketbook containing the iPad and credit cards was then found inside the defendants’ apartment.

The defendants were arraigned before acting Village of Monticello Justice Leo Glass and each remanded to the Sullivan County Jail on $10,000 bail pending further court action.

Legrand and Wise were each charged with the felonies of grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.
