Delaware plans stronger dog laws

HORTONVILLE, NY — At the Delaware Town meeting on June 12, the board discussed a plan to modify its laws, and specifically the town’s dog control laws. The town clerk, Tess McBeath, acknowledged this was going to be a big task.

McBeath said the reason for updating the laws was to provide, “easier access to the laws and ordinances for enforcement and accessibility. The process includes review and revision of all town laws to eliminate duplicates and inconsistencies.”

The changes to the current dog laws will allow the town to “recover the real costs of picking up and harboring dogs, rather than the minimal fees we have now. It allows us to change fees by resolution rather than local law. And finally, it authorizes the enforcement of the no-dogs law in the Callicoon Creek Park,” according to McBeath. The new dog laws will require a public hearing before they can take effect.

In other news, several options were presented by Steve Caputo of the environmental consulting firm First Coastal, based in Westhampton Beach, to make a proposed new sewer plant in Callicoon more able to withstand storms like Hurricane Sandy. The town engineer will contact Caputo regarding the presentation and the option available to the town.
