MONTICELLO, NY — Two Monticello police officers soon had their hands full after a traffic stop on Hillside Avenue in the village on April 19.

At about 10 a.m., Officer John Calvello Jr. stopped a 2006 Jeep Liberty for a traffic violation. Anthony Shackleford, 23 and a resident of Monticello, was a passenger in the car with two other people.

While the other occupants of the vehicle were being interviewed, an officer searched Shackelford and discovered that he was holding a plastic zip-lock baggie containing crack cocaine.

Shakleford then bolted from officers and a foot chase ensued. Shackelford ran to a swamp behind the Evergreen Drive housing complex and directly into waist-deep water. Calvello and backup officer Harry Mota pursued Shackelford into the water.

Police say Shackelford then intentionally submerged other illegal narcotics that he had on his person into the water, while continuing to try flee from officers.

The officers engaged in a violent struggle with Shackelford, who fought with the officers, grabbing onto both of them and attempting to pull them under the water. During the struggle, Shackelford also grabbed onto Calvello’s holstered service weapon and again tried to pull the officer under the water.

Calvello and Mota were ultimately able to subdue Shackelford and take him into custody. Calvello sustained numerous cuts on his hands and arms as a result of the struggle with Shakelford.

The other two occupants of the vehicle, driver Katie McKnight, 22, of Bloomingburg and passenger Robert Mullins, 29, of Loch Sheldrake were each charged with two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance. Both were released on appearance tickets to appear in the Village of Monticello justice court.

Shackelford was charged with felonies for criminal possession of a controlled substance, assault upon a police officer, two counts of attempted assault upon a police officer, attempted criminal possession of a weapon, tampering with physical evidence and misdemeanor resisting arrest.

Shackelford was arraigned in the Town of Rockland Justice court and remanded to the Sullivan County Jail without bail pending further court action.
