Three chambers of commerce to combine forces

WAYNE COUNTY, PA — Last week, members of the three Wayne County chambers of commerce voted to approve a merger of the Southern Wayne Chamber of Commerce, with its office in Hamlin; the Pocono Lake Region Chamber of Commerce, with its office near Hawley; and the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce, headquartered in Honesdale. The name of the new organization will be “The Chamber of the Northern Poconos.” It is expected to have 700 member businesses once the merger is complete.

”If all goes according the plan, we hope to launch by June or July,” said Todd Stephens, president of the Wayne County chamber. Combining three organizations into one involves creating a new corporate structure and dealing with a lot of administrative issues, such as merging accounting systems and payroll, he added.

“We’re looking at one website, one personnel manual… and how to bring everything together so we’re not duplicating things, [including] how to handle events,” explained Donna LaBar, executive director of the Wayne County chamber. “We have a lot of details to work out. There is much work to do.”

Both Stephens and Labar indicated that there are no plans at this time to close any of the locations of the three current chambers.
