Samuelson voted in for another term as Sullivan chairman

MONTICELLO, NY — At a meeting of the Sullivan County Legislature on January 2, Scott Samuelson was voted in by the legislature for another two-year term as chairman.

Before the meeting, legislator Gene Benson, who has served as vice-chair for the past two years, let it be known that he planned to challenge Samuelson for a shot at the top spot.

But at the meeting Samuelson was the only person nominated for the position, and he received eight of the nine votes, with Benson voting against.

Legislator Kitty Vetter, one of only two Republicans on the legislature, was nominated for the position of vice-chair and Benson was also nominated. Vetter received votes from six of the nine legislators and captured the seat.

After the vote Samuelson said, “I will continue to reach out to work together with everybody and do all the right things and make great things happen for Sullivan County….”

Legislator Cora Edwards interjected, “Can you repeat that please?”

After clarifying that she wanted him to repeat the part about “working together,” Samuelson said, “Yes, I absolutely believe that—reaching out and working together as a body to support the staff to do great things.”

After being elected vice chair, Vetter said, “Scott and I don’t necessarily agree on everything… but I think having both parties leading this government is very important.”

Before the meeting adjourned, Benson read a quote that he said came from an oath for a 12th century knight. He said, “Be without fear in the face of your enemies; speak the truth always, even if it leads to your death; safeguard the helpless and do no wrong—that is your oath.”
