Wayne recognizes expressions of hope

The artistic and personal efforts of Karen Reynolds, Judy Colon, Lisa Firmstone, Kathleen Reynolds, Manny Maestre, Robin Dunn, Deborah Everett, Renee Kiefer, and Joe Cruz Jr. were recognized by the Wayne County Commissioners on December 5.

The New Horizons Drop-In Center and Wayne County Drug and Alcohol received a grant from Behavioral Health Alliance of Rural PA (BHARP) to participate in their Wellness Media Campaign.

Drug and Alcohol Program Administrator Jeff Zerechak said the program “puts faces and names to recovery.”

Center coordinator for the project, Kim Follmer, said artwork was submitted by county consumers that reflects their interpretations of the concept of recovery.

Their efforts were judged by the county commissioners, who visited the center.

Each winner’s work was picked to illustrate a month on the calendar and winners received a $25 gift card.

The commissioners congratulated five of the artists who were on hand for the presentation. Chairman Brian Smith counseled them in applying themselves, “There is a lot of recovery to be found.”

The only verse among the winning entries was written and read by Joe Cruz Jr.

He wrote:

“Recovery means overcoming the odds against you.

It also means be open with people, do not hide anything.

Be yourself; don’t compare yourself with someone else.

Take advantage of the recovery services;

They are here to help.

Don’t let people get you down;

Keep your mind clear.”

Smith agreed that clarity of mind was “a recipe for success for everyone.”

Commissioner Wendell Kay quoted St. Francis deSales saying, “‘Be what you are; but be that well;’ Kay adding that, “We all need encouragement.”

Speaking “In the spirit of the season,” Commissioner Jonathan Fritz told the artisans that, “We want you to know that you are loved by your peers and those of us in county government.”

Winners will have calendars to distribute and calendars can be purchased through the New Horizons Drop-In Center. Call 570/253-5970, ext. 3686 for more information.
