Maria and Al Frangipane were honored with the SYDA Foundation Community Service Award, which is bestowed each year on a couple or person who is deemed to have been especially active in serving the community.

For years the couple has volunteered as first responders with the Lions Club Alert Program and the local American Red Cross. In emergency events, they coordinate efforts between the Lions and the Red Cross to staff shelters with volunteers.

The couple trained volunteers and staffed the Red Cross shelter at Sullivan County Community College after Hurricane Sandy.

The couple also volunteers as patient advocates at Catskill Regional Medical Center, raises funds for the hospital through various fundraising activities, and volunteers with other organizations in various capacities.

In accepting the honor, Maria said, “Al and I do not do the things we do to get the attention and kudos in a press release… We do what we do because to help others is the right thing to do and the feeling is always so awesome.”

The couple also received certificates from politicians and the Sullivan County Legislature in honor of the volunteer efforts.
