River Market under new ownership

BARRYVILLE, NY — The store was bustling on the morning of November 23, as John and Athena Lynn had just wrapped up their first staff meeting, and they were getting used to the feel of being the new proprietors of the River Market in Barryville.

Athena will be managing the store on a day-to-day basis, while John commutes daily to Manhattan. It’s a big change for Athena, who said she was perfectly happy with her advertising career at Ogilvy & Mather. But when the opportunity to buy the market came along, the couple felt it was too good an opportunity to pass up.

The market underwent a top-to-bottom renovation in 2005, and Athena and John had been impressed with the way the market was operated by former owners Cooper Boone and Mark Veeder. The couple liked the mix of merchandise, which aims to appeal to both the local population and the weekend population.

Athena said that with the various activities that go with managing a retail store, such as display, marketing, buying and so on, she should have more than ample opportunities to put her creative energy to good use.
