Cochecton signs climate pledge

The Cochecton Town Board voted unanimously at its November 13 monthly meeting to adopt the newly amended Climate Smart Community Pledge provided by Sullivan County. Cochecton became a target of criticism from the Department of Environmental Conservation for its failure to adopt all elements of the first Climate Action Plan (CAP) received from the county earlier this year, when town supervisor Gary Maas edited the first CAP document to include only those elements with which Cochecton could currently comply. Making no attempt to conceal his satisfaction at this outcome, Maas remarked that he felt a sense of personal vindication and was pleased that feedback from other towns of Cochecton’s size and demographics had prompted the county to draft a document containing more realistic near-term goals.

The CAP notwithstanding, the first order of business was to vote on a resolution for early payment of the town’s New York State and Local Retirement System invoice. The town has a longstanding policy of making early payment on the invoice, next due on February 1, 2014. If payment is made by December 15, 2013, the town will realize a savings of $780. Early payment was guaranteed by unanimous vote.

In correspondence news, Maas read a notice from the Senior Legislative Action Committee of Sullivan County (SLAC) announcing that Theresa Tolonsky will address American Cancer Society issues affecting Americans of all ages, including unexpected out-of-network medical bills and palliative care concerns, at SLAC’s next monthly meeting on Friday, November 22, at 10 a.m. in the Legislative Hearing Room of the Government Center in Monticello. SLAC is an organization that advocates for senior needs and services on the federal, state and local level. Its meetings are free and open to the public. SLAC’s holiday meeting will be held Friday, December 20, at the Ted Stroebele Recreation Center in Monticello. For more information about SLAC call 845/807-0241.

Miscellaneous news from various segments of the meeting included Upper Delaware Council liaison Larry Richardson’s report that the council has observed a 10% drop in river use since 2012. Code Enforcement Officer Greg Semenetz reported that many homeowners around the town are putting new roofs on their homes. Maas and Semenetz discussed the ongoing completion of the new town hall basement, weighing the bids, credentials and reputations of general contractors and electrical contractors. Contractor selections were made and, pending availability of those contractors, the basement should be completed by December 31.
