Weight restrictions coming for PA bridges

Posted

HARRISBURG, PA — Because Pennsylvania lawmakers have been unable to agree on the details of transportation bills, PennDot officials are now considering lowering the weight limit on 1,200 state bridges and possibly 1,000 local bridges.

Secretary of Transportation Barry Schoch told lawmakers at a public hearing last week, “At this point, unfortunately, my hands are tied. We don’t have the revenue to take care of these bridges.”

Schoch said the funding needed to care for the bridges and other transportation costs would be about $3.5 billion.

In June, members of the Senate voted to move forward with a bill that would raise the state’s fuel tax rate by 28 cents a gallon, which would raise about $2 billion, but the measure was not passed by the House before lawmakers went on their summer break. Members of the transportation committee are vowing a strong push for the bill when the lawmakers return to work in September.
