Damascus students take over

DAMASCUS TOWNSHIP, PA — The makeup of the Damascus Township Board of Supervisors had a different look at the monthly meeting on May 20. Four students from the Damascus Area School presided over the proceedings—with assistance from the actual supervisors—while taking part in a Supervisors for a Day program.

“These four individuals represent the finest at the school,” principal Peter Casazza told the board. “They were picked by their teachers and we’re very excited having this opportunity. We’re just very happy that we can work with the supervisors.”

The four students were eighth-graders Jordan Peer, who presided over the meeting, John Lukan, Bailey Quick and Kaitlyn Warren. “I thought the whole experience was very interesting,” said Kaitlyn.

John agreed, saying, “It was really neat.”

Jordan said she was initially nervous about heading the meeting. “I didn’t want to mess up,” she said, but added that she became more comfortable as the meeting progressed.

The supervisors and citizens were happy about the young students’ participation. “The children every year do a great job, and we hope they take an interest in this,” said resident Robert Gross, after which the students received a round of applause.

Board chairman Jefferey Dexter complimented the students on their performance and said, “These kids were a pleasure to be with.” He also commended secretary Karyle A. Woods and treasurer Dolores Card for helping coordinate the event.

The kids all agreed that it was interesting to be a part of the government process and gain knowledge on how it works.

The students had a light agenda with which to work. They approved the minutes of the April meeting, as well as the treasurer’s report. The supervisors discussed the possibility of leasing a road equipment truck, but took no action.

Webmaster Ed Lagarenne said the township now has 60,000 hits on its home page.

“I thought the meeting went really well,” said “supervisor” Bailey. “It was really good.”
