Ivan Martinez, 45, has been arrested for welfare fraud and other charges including grand larceny and misuse of food stamps. The charges, which were brought on March 29, come as the result of a joint investigation by the Sullivan County Department of Social Services Fraud Unit and the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office.
It is alleged that Martinez, who has been receiving Social Services assistance since 2010, was gainfully employed during part of this period and had also received unemployment benefits as well. Martinez is originally from the Bronx but was paroled to Sullivan County in 2010. The suspect was arraigned before county court Judge Michael McGuire and sent to the Sullivan County Jail without bail. Sheriff Mike Schiff says the investigation is continuing to determine the full amount of benefits that were fraudulently obtained.
