Plans for dog sledding and snowmobile business withdrawn

February 20, 2013

A property owner near Hawley has withdrawn plans for a proposed dog sledding and snowmobile plan that neighbors had expressed concerns about. The Lackawaxen board of supervisors held a conditional use hearing about the project on January 22, during which several members spoke about negative impacts from noise.

On February 15, the property owner, Michael Mancino, who with his wife Allison owns the Vanderbeek Farm, sent a letter to the supervisors apologizing for any inconvenience they had caused and also withdrew the application.

He wrote, “Frankly, I didn’t consider all the matters that you justifiably raised, nor did I expect the reaction from my neighbors, whose concerns were so eloquently expressed. Rather, I was looking at this as another community activity that would be enthusiastically embraced by visitors to the area as well as my neighbors, in a safe and secure setting. I believe my zeal clouded some of the other factors that you as supervisors have to consider, and rightly so. Needless to say, I thank you for giving me an opportunity to present my idea and I appreciate your thoughtful response.”
