Fire guts historic building

The building at 144 Sawkill Avenue in Milford was made famous as the place where Frank McCourt wrote his Pulitzer-Prize winning book “Angela’s Ashes.” Because of other historic factors, the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Fire was discovered in the old building on the morning of January 11. An investigation to determine the cause of the fire is underway. A woman who lived in the building escaped harm.

Firefighters at the scene said that an unidentified person was transported from the scene for undisclosed injuries. No fire department personnel were injured.

Unconfirmed reports said that a woman, presumably the resident, went back into the building to rescue some cats.

Damage to the structure is extensive. Smoke still poured out from the windows and door long after the flames were extinguished.
