Lumberland power outage discussed; Town fire department lauded for deer rescue

A six-hour power outage that affected the Town of Lumberland was caused by a breaker defect, supervisor Nadia Rajsz reported at the January 9 board meeting. “It was very unexpected,” Rajsz said of the January 4 outage.

The supervisor said she was told by a representative of Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc. that the defect in the breaker caused it to blow. According to the Orange and Rockland website, the outage affected about 1,000 customers.

The outage lasted from about 7:20 a.m. until about 1:20 p.m., Rajsz said.

Rajsz said the outage was unexpected partly because the breaker is only three years old. Breakers usually last about 35 years, she said.

Also at the meeting, Lumberland Fire Department president Ann Schulte Steimle received a round of applause from townspeople for her part in the rescue of a young doe that had fallen through ice January 5 in the Upper Delaware River near the Pond Eddy Bridge.

“Nice save,” supervisor Rajsz told Steimle.

Steimle spoke highly of the department’s new Diamondback Airboat used in the rescue. “It held really nice. It cut through the ice like butter,” she said.

In other news, Rajsz said the town has submitted more information to the Federal Emergency Management Agency regarding reimbursement from the effects of superstorm Sandy. The reimbursement would include the volunteer hours put in by town workers.

During the storm, the police constables responded to 86 calls for service and made 61 house calls, the fire department was manned for 24 hours a day, and the town hall was used as a warming center.

Rajsz didn’t know the specific dollar amount, but said, “We should be getting most of that money back. Hopefully this will be completed soon.”

The town received a $500 donation from Millennium Pipeline Company. The money will be used for the town’s youth program.
