Fins and Feathers doubles space

Things are going so well for Fins and Feathers Pet Supplies at 222 Willow Avenue that it is nearly doubling its space by 1,200 sq. ft to a maximum of 3,200 sq. ft.

It has taken over the space next door that was occupied by R3 Hardware, which has moved to larger space on Honesdale’s Main Street formerly occupied by the state liquor store.

“This industry is one of the top 10 businesses in the country,” said owner Brian Batten, 36, a life-long Wayne County resident.

“Even when business is bad, people want to keep their pets,” he said.

Batten has three part-time employees who are animal specialists, and said, “If business gets any better, I will definitely hire. Time will tell.”

Fins and Feathers carries salt-water fish such as sea anemones, sea urchins, angel fish and corral – anything that comes out of the sea, he said. Birds ranging from finches to macaws are also carried in the store. It does not sell dogs or cats.

“I don’t want to be a puppy mill,” he said, referring to businesses that breed dogs at a fever pitch. “These businesses tend to not take care of the dogs and abuse them.”

To celebrate the expansion, Fins and Feathers is hosting a grand opening on January 19 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“We’re going to have a DJ,” Batten said. “Also, we’ll be handing our prizes every half hour and other gifts. We hope that attracts more people.”
