Reaction to Sandy Hook tragedy

A small group of residents gathered in Central Park in Honesdale for a candlelight vigil on December 14 to honor the victims of the shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT and to pray for their families.

Similar gatherings were held throughout the nation sponsored by the progressive group Move On. Those who gathered held a moment of silence and then talked about the need for restraint of automatic fire arms that have no other purpose than to kill people more efficiently.

The incident, in which 20 elementary school children and six adults were killed, sparked responses from schools throughout the region.

For instance, Robert Dufour, superintendent of Eldred Central School District, said, “Over the weekend web links were sent out to the faculty and staff to assist them with answering children’s questions regarding the incident when they returned to school on December 17. The links have also been posted to our website for use by our parents.”

Further, “Each building’s school emergency team met to discuss building security and other safety issues. Faculty and staff are being vigilant and assuring doors and windows are properly secured. Exterior doors are being checked throughout the day to assure that they are locked. We will also be practicing lock-down drills in each building over the coming weeks.”

Nancy Hackett, superintendent of Sullivan West Central School District, said similar measures were taken there.
