Samuelson voted in for another term as chairman

Posted

At a meeting of the Sullivan County Legislature on January 2, the legislature voted in Scott Samuelson for another two-year term as chairman.

Before the meeting, legislator Gene Benson, who has served as vice-chair for the past two years, let it be known that he planned to challenge Samuelson for a shot at the top spot.

But at the meeting Samuelson, a Democrat, was the only person nominated for the position, and he received eight of the nine votes, with Benson, also a Democrat, voting against.

Legislator Kitty Vetter, one of only two Republicans on the legislature, was nominated for the position of vice-chair and Benson was also nominated. Vetter received votes from six of the nine legislators and therefore captured the seat.

The two were sworn in immediately after the brief meeting by Judge Frank LaBuda.

Before the meeting adjourned, Benson said he was quoting from an oath for a 12th Century knight. He said, “Be without fear in the face of your enemies; speak the truth always, even if it leads to your death; safeguard the helpless and do no wrong—that is your oath.”
