Kauneonga Lake man killed in Route 17B accident

Posted

On Wednesday, October 23, 2013, at approximately 12:45 p.m. the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 report of a head on collision on State Route 17B and Kitz Road in Monguap Valley.

At the scene deputies found that a 2001 Hyundai driven by Donald V. Murray, Jr, age 52, of Kauneonga Lake, had crossed the double yellow line while traveling westbound.

Murray’s vehicle struck a 2007 Kia, driven by Diane Wekerle of Narrowsburg, which was traveling eastbound towards Monticello. The investigation revealed that a westbound vehicle had come to stop, waiting to make a left turn onto Kitz Rd. A US Mail truck was on the shoulder at the same location delivering mail.

Murray’s Hyundai approached the two stopped vehicles from behind and left over 100 feet of skid marks before crossing the double yellow line and striking the Kia. Murray was pronounced dead at the scene by Sullivan County Coroner Alan Kesten.

Wekerle was flown to Westchester Medical Center by helicopter. Wekerle’s passenger was taken to Catskill Regional Medical Center with non life threatening injuries.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by State Police, Bethel Constables, Monticello Fire, Mobile Medic, the District Attorney’s Office and the Smallwood-Monguap Valley Fire Department.
