Sullivan Renaissance lauds Lumberland

The Town of Lumberland received a framed photograph of one of its most winning projects—Circle Park—and the glowing accolades of Sullivan Renaissance (SR) representative Glenn Pontier during the town meeting on October 10.

“Since Sullivan Renaissance has started, we’ve had projects in all the towns and villages of Sullivan County, but one of my favorites has been Circle Park,” said Pontier. “Last year, Circle Park won several awards, including a Second Place, Category B award of $7,000. But it was also recognized by a different set of judges for its beautiful flowers.” Pontier called the Lumberland projects an outstanding collaboration between the citizens and volunteers and town.

“Sullivan Renaissance was the kick in the pants that we needed to get this done,” said William McKerrell, a representative of the project. “They’re the driving force. We’ve been involved since 2004 and in that time have received over $71,000 in SR grant money and that doesn’t include the $50,000 Golden Feather Award that we won. If you look at in-kind services and volunteer time and work, there’s over $600,000 in Circle Park.

And it didn’t cost anything from the taxpayer’s pocket.”

During her report, supervisor Nadia Rajsz announced that the tentative town budget shows a decrease of $40,000 and is available for review in the town offices in Glen Spey.

Ann Stiemle of the Lumberland Fire Department noted that more than 6,000 emergency management service hours were contributed over the past year and that the younger members of the department had provided a highly successful fire prevention presentation to children at the George Ross Mackenzie Elementary School. Councilman Joe Carr thanked the department for an excellent presentation at the Lumberland Senior Center about the types of gear used and the range of costs involved.

In other matters, a special meeting and public informational meeting on the Lumberland Fire Department’s proposed Length of Service Award Program (LOSAP) has been scheduled for October 29 at 7 p.m. at the town hall in Glen Spey. The purpose is to review the program, which will be on a public referendum vote in the November election.
