Gas well fees to be distributed in block grants

PENNSYLVANIA — Block grant distribution of the funds from Pennsylvania’s gas well fees will be implemented by the Pennsylvania Public Utilities Commission around December 1 to county conservation districts, according to Peter Tarby of the Department of Environmental Protection Water Management Program.

Monies for 2011 will be distributed retroactively, he said. Block grants are one half of the total revenue.

Counties with many wells like Bradford will receive a larger portion of the fees.

“New legislation passed this year sets a per-well fee and a production fee,” he said. The total pool that has been collected is under $200 million.

Susquehanna County has seven exploratory wells. It will receive a small amount of the funds. Because 10% of Wayne County falls within the Susquehanna River Watershed, it may also receive a small amount.

Use of the money is designated for repair of roads and bridges that have been affected by the industry.
