Wayne County extends voter registration hours; new program announced for photo ID

Posted

The county commissioners on the Board of Elections approved a suggestion from Cindy Furman, Director of the Wayne County Department of Elections, to extend the hours of registration for the week of October 1 to October 6 in preparation for the presidential elections on November 6. The 4:30 p.m. closing will be extended to 5:30 p.m. and the office will be open on Saturday, October 6 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

“We want to make it easier for people who usually work until 5:00 p.m. to register,” Furman said.

She also announced that there are two separate photo identifications that the state will be handing out. One will come from the Department of State and the other will come from PennDOT, but PennDOT will issue both types.

The free PennDOT photo ID card can be obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). In Wayne County, it is located on Route 191 south of Honesdale. Days and hours when this facility with Photo ID capacity is opened are Tuesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This card can only be used for voting, not for other identification purposes. “When a PennDOT customer service representative determines that a registered voter does not have the necessary documentation to receive a free PennDOT photo ID, the employee will then begin the process of issuing a free Department of State photo ID,” Furman said.

The Department of State ID is available only to registered voters who do not have another photo ID acceptable for voting, who do not possess all of the documentation required to obtain a free PennDOT photo ID and cannot obtain the documentation without payment of a fee.

Commissioner Wendell Kay, the chairman of the Board of Elections said, “We are arranging with the county senior centers to provide transportation to the DMV so that the elderly can obtain a photo ID necessary for voting.”
