Newfield to plug Wayne test wells

WAYNE COUNTY, PA — Newfield Exploration Co. is plugging its test wells in Damascus and Manchester townships. According to the company, the move is being made to satisfy regulations, and has no implications for the ultimate viability of the wells.

There is a moratorium on further drilling in Wayne County while the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC) finalizes regulations governing drilling in the basin. So far, the commission members have failed to reach agreement on passing the rules.

The few test wells the DRBC allowed to be drilled during this period cannot be converted to production until final regulations are released.

The three vertical wells are the Crum, Teeple and Woodlands Management wells. They were drilled in 2010 and temporarily plugged. According to the Department of Environmental Protection, the company filed to place them in inactive status late last year.

A statement released by Newfield said the company does plan to maintain its leases in northeastern Wayne County. Company spokesman Keith Schmidt said it was premature to talk about what steps the company will take going forward, given uncertainties not only about regulations but also about the price of natural gas.
