Climate change advisory panel convened

Posted

As the next step in Sullivan County’s fulfillment of the Climate Smart Pledge it signed as part of the NYS Department of Conservation’s Climate Smart Communities Program, a Climate Action Plan (CAP) citizens’ advisory panel has been formed, and met for the first time on Thursday, August 9.

The committee is tasked with developing a plan that will move all sectors of the county, from county and municipal governments to individual households and businesses, to take the steps needed to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). The exact target for emissions reductions and the dates by which the reductions are to be achieved have not yet been set, but a preliminary roadmap suggests a possible target of 20% by 2020.

The panel, which reports to the Sustainable Policy Legislative Committee, will work closely with the Sullivan Alliance for Sustainable Development, which has a contract with the county for consulting regarding green initiatives and has already done a considerable amount of work in areas like inventorying current emissions as a first step to develop plans to reducing them and promoting programs like the New York State Green Jobs – Green NY program
