Free home energy assessments available in Wayne/Pike

Local Pennsylvania homeowners can save energy and money with free home energy assessments this summer. The Energy Awareness Action Movement (TEAAM) is sponsored by Sustainable Energy Education and Development Support (SEEDS).

TEAAM is a grassroots, community project designed to encourage local residents and homeowners to conserve energy through hands-on learning and to provide valuable skills to area youth. The assessments are performed by teams of high school students who have been professionally trained in home energy efficiency by Building Performance Institute professional instructor Nick Hindley, shown at left above with TEAAM member, Sarah Rutledge, who photographs a foundation that needs sealing.

Kayleigh Cornell, TEAAM project manager, points to the crack while TEAAM member, Balasz Markos, takes notes for the homeowner report. In 2011, 80 free home energy assessments were performed in the area. Homeowners receive a list of recommended improvements, along with discounts at various local businesses. TEAAM does not recommend contractors but gives suggestions on what is needed. Residents decide what improvements to make, if any. Participants must be responsible for their own electric bill, have access to these bills for a year and be willing for TEAAM to perform a one- to two-hour interview and visual walk-through of the residence. To be eligible for the free service, email seedsgroup@gmail.com or call 570/630-0592.
