Attempted murder charged in Beach Lake stabbing

A Beach Lake woman has been charged with attempted murder of her estranged husband, and as of press time was awaiting a hearing on Wednesday.

Carolyn Verderber, 54, who previously resided for some years in Callicoon, NY, was sent to the Wayne County Jail without bail in connection with an incident with Joe Verderber, 47, on Thursday, June 7.

A divorce trial between the two is pending, and while Joe was visiting the couple’s home at 36 Third St., he reportedly told Carolyn she should watch him while he repaired the water filter as she would probably be awarded the home at the trial. At that point, according to a police report, Carolyn stabbed him in the back with a butcher knife, with the entire blade penetrating.

Joe ran to the house of neighbors Dian and Leslie Bogert, who called for an ambulance and a local nurse. Joe was stabilized and medically evacuated by a helicopter to Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton. He is expected to make a full recovery.

While Joe ran to the neighbor’s house, Carolyn left the scene in her car. She was apprehended after returning home later in the day, and was arraigned on Friday morning. The charges are attempted homicide and aggravated assault.
