Stepping it up in Callicoon; the shape of things to come for a river hamlet

Architect Michael Chojnicki and members of the Callicoon Business Association have been working for more than a year on plans to renovate the parking lot and steps that separate Upper Main Street and Lower Main Street.

There is now about $42,000 available for the project in just about equal parts from the Golden Feather Award, which the project was granted as part of the Sullivan Renaissance program in 2011, and also from a New York Main Street Program grant from Albany, which was applied for and administered by the Sullivan County Division of Planning and Environmental Management through the local River Corridor Main Street Program.

Chojnicki said the project also involved collaboration with the county Department of Public Works, New York Susquehanna and Western Railroad and the Town of Delaware.

The work will involve removing the existing retaining wall and steps, and reconfiguring the parking area without losing any parking spaces. The project will make the steps at the wall safer and easier to use. Ethan Cohen, the chief county planner, said the project will help to connect Upper Main Street and Lower Main Street.

Cohen said that the hamlet of Callicoon has been very active in pursuing the river corridor grants, with awards of varying sizes going to Café Devine, the Delaware Valley Depot, Matthews on Main, the Callicoon Laundromat and the Delaware Branch of the Western Sullivan Public Library.
