Liberty senior arrested for multiple thefts

Posted

On Wednesday April 18, 2012 at approximately 8:00 AM, a concerned neighbor called the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office to report a suspicious person in the vicinity of 97 Huschke Road in the Town of Liberty. Patrols responded to the scene and located a subject who was in possession of a lawn mower.

After a brief investigation Deputies determined that the mower had been taken from the garage of that residence. Deputies arrested Alfredo Evangelista, age 76, of 78 Huschke Road.

While in custody, Evangelista admitted to Deputies that he had also burglarized a residence at 94 Huschke Road on April 15, 2012. Alfredo Evangelista was charged with Burglary in the 2nd degree, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the 4th, both Felonies, and Petit Larceny, a Misdemeanor.

Sheriff's Detectives recovered property taken in the two burglaries from Evangelista's residence. Sheriff Mike Schiff said that this case illustrates that there is no typical burglar. "We have been asking the citizens of Sullivan County to remain vigilant, and most important, if you see something, say something", said the Sheriff. "In this case the suspect was an older gentleman (76 years old) who would generally not attract the attention of the average citizen.

Evangelista was arraigned before Liberty Town Justice Brian Rourke and remanded to the Sullivan County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail. Sheriff's Detective's are investigating the suspect's possible connection to other burglaries in the area.
