Health director calls for Sullivan health forum

Posted

a meeting of the Sullivan County Legislature’s Health and Family Services Committee, public health director Carol Ryan proposed the idea of a health forum to discuss the county’s low health ranking in the recently released national report, “County Health Rankings.” (See “Sullivan County nearly most unhealthy” in last week’s River Reporter.)

Among the areas in which Sullivan ranked considerably worse than state averages were smoking (30% vs. 18%), primary care physicians (one for every 1407 residents vs. one for every 689) and access to healthy foods (35% vs. 61%).

Ryan said she had read Facebook comments requesting some kind of county response to the report. She would like to see residents as well as government officials, health providers, educators and employers participating, and believes a date could be set for late summer or early fall.
