Sullivan Renaissance kicks off season

Posted

The Sullivan Renaissance Annual Conference & Expo was held at the CVI Building on March 10 and unofficially kicked off the gardening and beautification season.

The new Sullivan County Legislative Chairman Scott Samuelson started the program with an a cappella rendition of America the Beautiful. Can he sing? Senator John Bonacic thought so, and said Samuelson was in the wrong business, meaning he should be a professional singer.

Bonacic also acknowledged that we’re still living with the effects of the great recession, but he predicted that this would be a breakout decade for the county in terms of tourism, and he credited Sullivan Renaissance and Bethel Woods Center for the Arts with laying the foundation for that success.

New for this year, the organization unveiled The Renaissance Collection, which it describes as a “unique collection of annuals and perennials that have an exceptional ability to meet the challenges of gardening within Sullivan County.”

Also new, at the end of the season, the public will be invited on a tour of the winning gardens and projects that compete in the Sullivan Renaissance contest. The tour is scheduled for September 8.

The keynote speaker was Joe Lamp’l, who has become a rather famous gardening expert through various television shows, including Growing a Greener World, which mixes traditional gardening with the exploration of practices that are good for the environment. His presentation included a discussion of several people and organizations who have found unique ways to make a living through organic gardening.
