Community garden open for applicants

The Transition Community Garden, located on the grounds at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center on Golf Hill Road, invites gardeners to join for the 2012 growing season.

To sign up for a garden plot or to learn more about how the community garden works, come to a pre-season gardeners’ meeting on Wednesday, February 22, at 7 p.m. in the Community Room at the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce, 32 Commercial Street. Applicants from Honesdale and the wider surrounding area are invited. New and potential gardeners are especially welcome to attend.

The garden will have 25 raised beds this year, plus two that are wheelchair-accessible. Garden plots in two sizes—four by eight feet and four by 16 feet—are rented on a sliding scale reflecting ability to pay. People needing additional food security such as those participating in USDA’s Women, Infants and Children (WIC) and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and those participating in local food pantries and food banks will be given top priority. Apartment renters and people with no backyards for their own gardens also will be given special consideration, as will residents and staff of Ellen Memorial.
