Pig Mountain packs ‘em in

Despite the wind and intermittent rain, about 240 people came to the Pig Mountain event on October 15, held at Bridle Hill Farm on Hemmer Road in Jeffersonville. The event featured four chefs from New York City, preparing eight hogs.

Dan Young, the owner of the farm who also works in the food distribution business, said it was a truly community event.

Tim Mullally of Mullally’s Tractors provided the equipment needed to dig the pits to roast the pork. Unfortunately, because of the rain, the pits could not be used and other means of roasting were sought. Young said he reached out to the Paul Carlucci, co-owner of Villa Roma Resort and Conference Center, and was immediately given access to the

Villa Roma kitchens just hours before show time.
The Sullivan County Visitors Association and the Catskill Watershed Council helped reach out to local businesses and farmers who displayed their wares at the event.

Young, who opened the horse farm with his wife Elinor five years ago, said it has been a dream of his to get city chefs to come up to Sullivan County for just this sort of event, to help shine a light on the area’s expanding possibilities as a food- shed that can serve the city.

So, when organizers approached him about using his farm for the occasion, he didn’t hesitate to donate the use of the sprawling facility without charge. He said he hopes to make this a yearly event.

Proceeds from Pig Mountain will go to support Farmhearts, a nonprofit organization with a mission of helping family farms in the Catskills.
