Helping a Honesdale youth

After coming across a poster describing the struggles of Peter Freshour, a 2009 graduate of Honesdale High School who has been diagnosed with Wilson Disease and cirrhosis of the liver, Vanessa DeGori decided she needed to help. “As the mother of three healthy boys, I am aware of how lucky and blessed my husband and I are,” she said.

Wilson Disease is a rare inherited disorder that affects the liver and can eventually impact the kidneys, brain and eyes. Peter will need a transplant in 10 to 15 years and faces monthly medication costs of $1,800. There are six children in the family.

“On September 3, I will be walking 10 miles from Narrowsburg, NY to my home in Damascus, PA to bring awareness to this disease and to help the family with their medical bills,” said DeGori, who has begun collecting donations at her business, the Milanville General Store on River Road. She has set a goal of at least $1,000.

DeGori has done other community fundraisers in the past and thanked the many patrons who have come into her store and donated more than $900 so far. “My customers are always the most generous people,” she said.

All donations will be given to the Freshour family to help with medical costs. Donations can be made to Honesdale National Bank, account 1380382103, or dropped off at The Milanville Store or sent to Vanessa DeGori, P.O. Box 7, Milanville PA 18443.
