Storm hammers region

A fierce storm ripped through the region on the night of May 26, downing trees, knocking out power to various areas and causing destruction.

Golf ball-sized hail and heavy rains were reported in the Pennsylvania Power & Light (PPL) region. PPL reported that more than 350 crews worked through the weekend to restore power to customers in the service area, which includes Wayne and Pike counties.

PPL said it restored power to more than 127,000 customers since Thursday night, when four confirmed tornadoes and strong thunderstorms ravaged the region.

In New York, NYSEG reported that 11,438 customers were without power in Sullivan County and 92,000 customers lost power in the company’s coverage area, which includes 12 counties. Power to most customers was restored by May 30.

“We appreciate our customers’ patience and understanding as we complete our work,” said Walt Matyjas, director of electric distribution at NYSEG. “We also owe our gratitude to the law enforcement agencies, fire departments, highway departments, emergency management personnel and local officials that have helped us immensely. Without their support, our work would be considerably more difficult.”

NYSEG distributed dry ice to their customers without electric service.

In Honesdale, most shops and gas stations were without power Friday, causing long lines at the few gas stations that did have power outside of the borough.

School districts on both sides of the Upper Delaware River were closed on Friday because of a lack of power.

Poor Response Time Should Be Looked at PSC

I realize that this as a freak storm and that there were many obstacles to deal with, but 70-hours with no electric is tough to swallow. At the rates they're charging per kilowatt, there is no way we should have been without electric that long. I honestly believe tat they are understaffed and could care less as we're only a handful of people living on this block. My service goes out at least once a month, and in most cases more then that, and the response times are always long.

I had to call the kids and cancel the weekend when I was informed that it could be "days" before we were turned back on. So they went to the Hamptons to spend their money. instead.
