North Branch church reopens

NORTH BRANCH, NY — Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church of North Branch, which was forced to close by the Metropolitan New York Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America due to rising debt and falling membership last year, has been reinstated.

The Synod voted last week to reinstate the church at its assembly following an appeal to the body by the president of the North Branch church, Meta Sorge. Sorge’s parents were the first couple to be wed in the 75-year-old church.

Keesler likely winner in Damascus

DAMASCUS, PA — Dolores Keesler will probably be on the ballot this year as a Democratic candidate for supervisor in Damascus Township. Keesler, who was removed from her seat as the township representative on the Upper Delaware Council, received a combined total of about 97 write-in votes at polling on May 17 in the two polling places.

Township supervisor Joe Canfield, a Republican, received about 35 write-ins on the Democratic ballot. The final write-in totals won’t be released until May 28, after officials have a chance to go over the votes to ensure that they were correctly tallied.

Keesler said she also received about 82 write-in votes on the Republican ballot.
