Info sought on puppies dumped near Walmart

HONESDALE, PA — Humane Society police officer Marlene Metzger, along with Pennsylvania dog warden, James Rickert are seeking information regarding the abandonment of eight small, mixed breed puppies. The pups were left in a cardboard box and dumped off in a parking lot at the intersection of Route 6 and the road up to Walmart.

A passerby found the box of pups on August 2 at approximately 7:30 am. The person contacted Dessin Animal Shelter and brought the pups in.

“The puppies appear to be about 4-5 weeks old and should still be nursing from their mother,” said Metzger. “They are starting to eat gruel and drink water from a bowl. They are in a foster home and will remain there until old enough to be placed for adoption.”

The investigation is ongoing. Authorities will be reviewing security camera videos from neighboring businesses and have collected evidence from the scene.

Officer Metzger said, “This is a very busy intersection and if anyone saw something or someone that morning or even the night of August 1, please call authorities. Additionally if anyone with information about a litter of pups about 4-5 weeks old that have suddenly disappeared, please call 570/647-0239.

“This is a senseless horrible crime. These pups could have gotten out of the box and been hit in the road. They also could have died of heat exhaustion if no one had seen the box and stopped and picked them up,” stated Rickert.

Officers encourage the person responsible for this to come forward before all of the evidence is processed, to avoid additional charges. For more info contact Metzger at 570/647-0239 or 570/493-3377.
